Meme subset
A subset of the 67 62 61-question meme that's been going around... I'm only going to answer the questions that I think are interesting and haven't been asked recently; uninteresting questions, or questions that are fairly common to memes, will be removed.

1. Were you named after anyone?
I don't believe so.

2. Do you wish on stars?
No.

3. When did you last cry?
I think there was a "Whose Line" sketch a couple nights ago where I was practically crying because I was laughing so hard. I don't recall which one it was, though.

4. Do you like your handwriting?
My printing is fine, but I don't like my cursive.

5. What's your favorite lunch meat?
Turkey

6. What is your most embarrassing CD?
Most embarassing, and you want me to admit it? Ha!

7. If you were another person, would YOU be friends with you?
That would depend on who I was, and who was me. (I'm using "me" as a first-alternate person nominative pronoun here.)

8. Are you a daredevil?
Extremely not so. Nor am I a spider man. I don't like spiders.

9. Do looks matter?
Looks can get me to look. That's sort of the extent of it.

10. How do you release anger?
Bottling it up and selling it on eBay.

11. Where is your second home?
/home/davidh

12. What was your favorite toy as a child?
That depends on my age, but for a significant portion of my childhood, I'd have to say Legos. (This is also true for a significant portion of my adulthood. :-) )

13. Which class in high school do you think was totally stupid?
None of them. Sure, some of them may have had boring or dumb parts, but no class was entirely stupid.

14. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
I think so. However, I use my powers of sarcasm for good, not evil.

15. What are your nicknames?
People have referred to me by such terms as "Chief", "Admiral", "davidh", and "The Six-Dimensional Hologram".

16. Would you bungee jump?
Highly doubtful.

17. Do you untie your shoes when you take them off?
Impossible. I wear shoes which close by means of that wonderful Vulcan invention, Velcro.

18. Do you think that you are strong?
I was able to knock over a pile of bricks while reading "the Monster at the end of this Book", so yes.

19. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Mint Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Unfortunately, they don't seem to actually *make* that flavor, so I have to make do with either the first three words or the last four.

20. What color pants and shoes are you wearing?
Black.

21. What are you listening to right now?
I'm not really *listening* to it, but I can hear people chatting in the background.

22. Last thing you ate?
French fries.

23. If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
Probably something in the blue family.

24. What is the weather like right now?
It's about room temperature, with low humidity. It's much colder outside, though.

25. Last person you talked to on the phone?
A guy in the [application server] department, to get the site restarted.

26. What is your ethnicity?
Hmm... "2 a : of or relating to large groups of people classed according to common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background". My racial ethnicity is Caucasian. My national ethnicity is American, English, Scottish, Irish, Danish, Norwegian, and at least one other countryish. I don't think I have a tribal ethnicity. My religious ethnicity is Christian. My linguistic ethnicity is English. My cultural ethnicity is midwestern, middle-class technical geek.

27. Favorite drink?
As if you need to ask.

28. Favorite sport?
Nope.

29. Do you wear contacts?
No. I have a tremendous fear of sticking things on my eyes; I prefer to have my lenses floating a fraction of an inch in front of them.

30. Are you single?
Yes.

31. Favorite food?
If you don't know this, you haven't been paying attention.

32. Last movie you watched?
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (with directors' commentary and subtitles for people who don't like the film).

33. Favorite day of the year?
I don't think I really have one.

34. Hugs or kisses?
I like all varieties of Hershey's chocolate.

35. Do you have any favorite rants and, if so, what are they?
I don't know if they're really "favorites", but the ones that tend to come up most often relate to bad drivers (in which direction, unfortunately, I seem to see myself heading... I've got to correct that) and people who have no cell phone etiquette (my work cell phone has not yet corrupted me... I've got to prevent that).

36. What is your favorite dessert?
I don't think I really have one; I like most dessert items.

37. What books are you reading?
Microserfs, by Douglas Coupland, and Strange New Worlds VII, edited by Dean Wesley Smith. Both will be interrupted as soon as either Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Volume Two or Three arrives (though they'll probably arrive together).

38. What did you watch last night on TV?
The State of the Union address on C-SPAN, part of "The Late Late Show" (Stan Lee was on), part of "Last Call with Carson Daly" (just a few minutes), part of "Family Guy", and part of "Futurama".

39. What's the farthest you've been from home?
Apparently California, when I was a baby. However, I have no conscious memory of this, so I'll have to go with a few feet into the Pacific Ocean, in Oregon.

40. Do you have a special talent?
I can abridge lengthy memes in a single bound.

Ah, chocolate chip cookie ice cream. Personally, I think it would be less good with the addition of mint flavor, but that's just me. I'd like to know what you thought of Microserfs once you've finished it. And I think maybe it's supposed to be a brain? Or a light bulb? Or a thought bubble?

It's possible that it wouldn't be as good with mint, but I seem to recall having eaten mint chocolate chip cookies at one point several years ago and enjoying them very much, so I would think that mint chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream would also be good. At the very least, I'd like to try it once.

My thoughts on Microserfs thus far (I'm somewhere between a third and a half of the way through it)... it's a very different style of writing from most books, almost as though I'm reading a blog on paper. (No, not just a journal. Although weblogs are sort of electronic versions of journals, the writing style in blogs tends to be different from that in journals... at least, based on the journals and blogs I've written in and read.) I'm not sure if there's really a "plot" to the book... it's very character-based (that tends to happen for first-person perspective books, though). But I'm liking it.

A brain would be more appropriate for "smart"; a light bulb, "insightful"; a thought bubble, "thoughtful". None of them really suggest "accomplished" to me, though. However, a roll does suggest accomplishment: You have successfully baked some rolls, and to celebrate your achievement, you place one on your head. Princess Leia has done this at least twice. :-)

Perhaps it's a rolled-up diploma?

And, having had a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream next to a scoop of cookie dough ice cream in the same bowl, I have a feeling doing the final merge would be just as good.
